Principal’s message
Welcome to Captain Michael VandenBos Public School!
Captain Michael VandenBos is a K-8, dual-track school, offering both English and French Immersion programs to students in Whitby, Ontario. Our doors first opened on January 22, 2001, with 435 students in grades JK to 8. Since then, we’ve seen continued growth in both streams. This year, we welcome over 800 students to our vibrant school community.
Captain Michael VandenBos was a Whitby native who had a childhood dream of becoming a Snowbird. His hard work and dedication brought him within reach of his goal, and he was set to become the team’s commander. Tragically, Captain VandenBos lost his life in a routine training mission near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, on December 10, 1998. To honour his memory, the Durham District School Board named this school after him.
At Captain Michael VandenBos Public School, we encourage our students to follow Michael’s example by developing strong life skills in both academics and extracurricular activities. The “VandenBos Spirit” shines through our clubs, sports, Spirit Days, and other school events.
Our school and community work hand-in-hand to meet the academic, physical, emotional, and social needs of our students. Each day, our dedicated staff provides engaging and effective academic programs in a safe and nurturing environment. Our goal is to guide every student to become a cooperative, productive member of society, living by the Snowbird motto: "Flying High for Excellence."
Our School Community Council and numerous parent volunteers work cooperatively with our dedicated staff to help students realize their potential and achieve their goals. A true community atmosphere exists at Captain Michael VandenBos Public School.
